Sunday Basketball (officially Second day) - Action

I played basketball with my friends yesterday as well, 27th of September 2009, from 3:30 - 6:30.

Many of my friends are going to other International Schools such as British School, Colombo International School and Moir Elizabeth School. Since, many from Moir Elizabeth went on the field trip and came back on late Sunday afternoon, many of them didn't come to play basketball this week.

But fortunately, there were the local school students' basketball team practicing from the school where we played at, we could play match with them.

Prison Babies Planning ( Service)

We had the first day with the children from prison last Thursday. This year, I saw many new faces, in fact, I only recognized three of them from last year out of ten children came this year.

The supervisor of Prison Babies, Ms. Skelly, has divided the group into 6 small groups since we have too many students than the children. We decided only two group to be in charge for a week and other two groups in charge for another week.
So the two group in charge this week are Hella's and mine. Hella and I met in the IT lab and tried to come up with some brilliant new plans or activities to do with them this week. We, however, had a hard time to think about it as because most of them are new that they are still a bit scared of us. Besides, we did research on several activities we can do with them, but most of them require some sorts of communication and we don't speak Singhala that we can't really explain it well, they look unreasonable to do with them.

We can still do paint with them. Watching a movie will be good as well (but still we need to find something doesn't need language.) As I have involved in this project for last two years, I found that the children like the physical outdoor activities more than anything else. So we better plan at least one indoor activity for first 10-20minutes and one outdoor activity for another 10-20 minutes.

From last two years, I found that we always do the same activities every week that I found it boring a bit. Children seemed enjoying them, but I want to do something new with them.
I don't know what to do yet but I'll think of more activities we can do with them for Thursday.

  • MUN
This year, I've involved in MUN(Model United Nations). I've heard that MUN is pretty fun to do and really helpful to learn how to debate from many friends of mine who have been involved in MUN before. Since MUN is a debate based conference, my personal goal is to develop my debating skills.

  • Talent Show
I want to either help organizing the Talent show or be participated in it. I have been participating and have performed Beatbox on the stage for last two years and last year, my group(Nahee, Cecilia and Hyung from 12 grade now), who performed Beatbox with flute Canon playing, won the 'OSC got Talents'.
I want to do Beatbox again with a different theme and plot.
My personal goal will be to win the competition again if I can :P(Just a joke) I found myself enjoying being on the stage which I didn't realize it before. Apart from winning the competition, my goal is just to participate in the talent show. If I win, that will be much better :P
  • Bass Guitar Class
I started learning Bass guitar from March from a very famous guitar player in Sri Lanka, Derek. I haven't learned bass guitar before, it was really fascinating and interesting from the very beginning.
My personal goal is to develop my skills and perform it at least once in front of others. In a long term, my goal is to travel around the world and do a missionary work with my father by playing guitar and also teaching the young children in Africa or maybe in the third countries. It will not happen unless I really work hard to learn properly and practice a lot that my father and I are really determined.

  • SAISA Track and Field
Since I like sports, I've been continually participating in many sports in and out of campus; basketball, football, baseball, swimming, badminton, table tennis and so on. As I turned up to grade 11, I've got less time than ever before. But still I want to participate in some sorts of sports to keep a good health all the time. I do really want to participate in as many SAISA competitions as I can, but since I'm too afraid to miss either IB HL Math, Physics, and Chemistry that I can't take the risk. :P
Since I made the SAISA Track and Field team last year and it's less stressful that I won't miss so many classes because it's happening at the end of the year when we are about to finish the course. I'm planning to participate in SAISA Track and Field again this year.
My personal goal is to make the team first, obviously. Last year, I came in fourth in the 100M dash and in the third place in the shotput, discus and long jump. Once I make the team, my goal would be to improve on my sprinting and throwing.
  • Sunday Church Basketball

Since the last summer break, my Korean friends from Korean church church and I have been playing basketball every Sunday. Our goal is to improve our own personal skills and learn more about how to play basketball better. We are actually organizing the match with Chinese and Local Sri Lankan teams and play with them. We learn tactics and skills from the elder Koreans; one used to play in the Korean amateur basketball team in Korea and the other is the OSC graduate who was in the SAISA basketball team before.
Basketball is one of my favorite sports ever and for the reason that I mentioned earlier, I'm planning to try out for SAISA basketball team this year. I believe that I can continually play basketball and develop my personal skills by doing so and it is my personal goal to develop my skills as a guard.

I'll take this week as a first official day of the basketball play for Action part. I'll continually write about how I'm improving after every week and try to upload as many pictures of me playing basketball as possible.

I played basketball with them this week as well from 3:30 - 7:00 at Senayake College in Colombo 7. For the last few months, we basically learn the concept of how to play basketball by playing the actual matches. From this week, however, since this basketball activity became bigger week by week (now it's almost 35 people playing), we decided to learn the tactics or skills which can be used usefully while playing the match.

It went pretty fast that playing basketball for three and half an hour. It was a bit tiring, but still fun.

  • Badminton & Table Tennis
Since this year, our new school gym has opened and now it's easier for us to play badminton in the gym. From time to time, I'll play badminton with my classmates at lunch and after school just for fun. It's not to develop my badminton skills to become a professional player, but just to keep my health and entertain myself.
Table tennis as well, we've got a table tennis table in my father's office. I was a completely beginner player and so is my brother. But then, my brother challenged me saying he's better than me. As I am full of competitive spirit, I accepted his challenge :P. We are practicing very hard by this competition in good faith.
They will help me keep me fit all the time so that it would be much easier for me to do Track and Field later.

*SERVICE

  • Prison Babies

I've been doing this Service Project for last two years from 2007 and I've been leading this from last year with Ysabelle who has graduated this year. It was the first time I led the Service project and I didn't really know what to do that I followed and helped with Ysabelle last year. That's why I couldn't really develop my leadership and my organizing skills. As I'm leading the Prison Babies Service Project this year again, my initial personal goal would be to develop my leadership and organising skills.
I've set up a blog for Prison Babies, (Link: http://pbatosc.blogspot.com/), to post the pictures of them taken every week and continually update the blog showing how we are doing in Prison Babies. I'm also planning to use this blog for 'Planning,' and we'll be consistently using this to check with the activities, which we should have planned before, for each week.
I'll put up more information about Prison Babies on the P.B. blog.

  • Mama-Papa Home Orphanage
During the IB Orientation, our grade (G.11) went to Mama-Papa Home orphanage where takes care of physically and mentally disabled children in Kalutara. We have spent only a few hours with them painting, playing cricket and basketball.
  • Math Tutoring
My math teacher, Ms.Huijnen and the school counselor, Mr.Tingley want me to help one student in 9th grade with math. Since math is my one of the most favorite subjects, I accepted it and I'm going to tutor him with math this year.
My goal is to help him with math well and help him improve math and get higher grade in math. My personal goal is to improve my teaching skill as well; I'm really bad at explaining and had no such teaching skills.
